Roatan – A Brief Overview

Roatan is the largest and most developed of the Bay Islands, it has the shape of a crocodile, its almost 40 miles long with a total land mass of 49 square miles, the island has a mountainous backbone and is totally surrounded by coral reefs, offering great snorkeling, scuba diving & fishing experiences.

Roatán is inhabited by approximately 30,000 people, English is widely spoken (part of the English pirates heritage) although Spanish is the official language of Honduras and the Bay Islands. Traveling around the island by road is easy since the majority of them are paved, you can use the public transportation service or rent a car, motorcycle, scooter or bicycle to see Roatán at your own leisure.

There are three fairly large towns: Roatán (or Coxen’s Hole) is the capital of the department. French Harbor and Oak Ridge are strongholds of the island’s flourishing fishing fleet. All commercial business and official activities develop in these three towns since banks, government offices, large stores, etc. are located there. Then there is the other part of Roatán…composed of small, quaint seaside fishing villages that still retain the enchanting relaxed & friendly atmosphere of the old days.

Warm and sunny almost all year round, during our “peculiar” rainy season, October and November, it rains late at night or in the early morning and does not preclude you from enjoying the Island activities.
